Seems if the Magistrate Report showed Wednesday that a "gang" of folks from Athens came into dodge to do some shopping? Problems seemed to be at the time to pay there were no funds in the wallets/ handbags of the Athens folks? Guess some of them learned that the Hicks from Vienna/ P'burg were a bit smarter than they looked? Now if we could only be as on the spot with all those drug dealers coming into the County?
Was watching a program I recorded Tuesday and it turned out to be a documentary in the making on about 129 "Teachers/ Interns" to learn how to live together in the wilds. In this case, they were in Panama setting up their little village. Had bought the biggest house in the local town which was near 2 Kilometers away as they put it "up and down hills" from the rancho. Lot of talk about how hard it was for the folks to walk from the local ville to the new rancho in the woods. Basically three (3) miles and they were collapsing on the side of the road.
I watched as the interns began to arrive to learn to work in the specialties being set up and the one kid (they were all in their 20s as part of the acceptance criteria), was going to the airport from somewhere to go to Panama. She noted she was not interested in the College scene and want to live in a different scenario from her home. Now the Teachers in this little commune; yes that is what this thing really is= a commune, have in many cases PHDs and MBAs. So the no College experience is exactly what she will get in a modified hands on living.
As I noted above, it is a Commune that they were establishing as a new experience to train/ teach people to give back to the World to make a difference. Now, I am not very smart and will be the first one to admit it, but I seem recollect Communes even when I was a kid and before. The only thing I did not see was the wide use of any type of drug. May have had some type of Alcohol, but I could not readily make out what it was. Seemed fresh water from a spring that could be drank straight from the creek was the source of their liquidity?
Did any of these kids ever watch old time TV? One of the most notable was Maynard Krebs, out of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis". Aired from 1959- 1963 where Krebs was a Beatnik, one of the most Commune loving types to be found and he was far from the first in the real world. Stayed close to home but was so "Bohemian" that it was little doubted he had been in the fringes of his era?
While I was fascinated by the scenery and issues they dealt with to get their water supply set up for the interns to arrive, plus housing, etc. But the plot was a bit aged for me, so it went as many shows do, into the delete bin.
Got a kick out of one of the letters this past Sunday. Guy from P'burg was all over the what he felt were high levels of lead and nitrates in the Vienna water supply. Felt that the EPA and its co-conspirators (?), in the vendetta against DuPont over the C8 were not paying attention to what may well be the real issues in the water in the overall MOV. A Viennese guy told me this had been going on for sometime about the quality of the water here? I did comment some time back that the testing of the wells water is not necessarily what is coming out of our taps. And that was well before the C8 Crisis that was concocted for us last year happened.
And once more into the breach came the "Our Opinion" group (?), to slaver about the inability of the State to keep its educated people here versus over the bridge to prosperity somewhere else. Along with a failing if not failed Educational System (although they are going to get the deserved $808. salary increase that is being snuck through the Legislature), we continue to throw huge amounts of dollars into the toilet and on to the sewer plants of waste. We provide more money than 31 other States for our Elementary and Secondary Schools with no return for the investment.
Combine a poorly educated populace here at home; educated ones have flown the coop; with our newest attempt at turning back the clock with the 3% Food Sales Tax and the folks in the real world outside of the borders of the West Virginia Province of the Poorest Nations elsewhere and we will see why getting folks to establish businesses/ stay here is going to be tough. Low wages and few benefits is not going to lure many with the other disadvantages going on.
It is obvious all the damage and harm 80 years of Democan control has done to this State; but now the Republicrats are busy turning the State back to the 50s and 60s on Taxes. 'nuff said'.
