I hope every parent reads the following completely. I think it is a shame.
This from WebMD:
Impetigo:
Most people get this highly infectious disease through physical contact with someone who has it, or from sharing the same clothes, bedding, towels, or other objects. The very nature of childhood, which includes much physical contact and large-group activities, makes children the primary victims and carriers of impetigo.
The Mayo Clinic:
You're exposed to the bacteria that cause impetigo when you come into contact with the sores of someone who's infected or with items they've touched — such as clothing, bed linen, towels and even toys.
American Osteopathic Assn:
Impetigo is highly contagious. Children can spread this skin infection from one area of the body to another by touching the infected area and then touching other parts of their bodies. The infection can also spread to other household members through clothing, towels, and bed linens that have been in contact with the infected person. Classmates and playmates also hold themselves at high risk of infection by coming in contact with the infected person or anything that he or she has touched.
Ringworm:
The Mayo Clinic:
Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection caused by mold-like parasites that live on the cells in the outer layer of your skin. It can be spread in the following ways:
- Human to human. Ringworm often spreads by direct, skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.
- Animal to human. You can contract ringworm by touching an animal with ringworm. Ringworm can spread while petting or grooming dogs or cats. It's also fairly common in cows.
- Object to human. Ringworm can spread by contact with objects or surfaces that an infected person or animal has recently touched or rubbed against, such as clothing, towels, bedding and linens, combs, and brushes.
- Soil to human. In rare cases, ringworm can be spread to humans by contact with infected soil. Infection would most likely occur only from prolonged contact with highly infected soil.
WebMD:
Ringworm is caused by a fungus that grows on the skin. Once the fungus is established, it spreads out in rings. The center of the ring may clear up, while a new ring of infection develops at the edge of the old ring.
Children are most likely to get ringworm. Ringworm of the scalp can spread from child to child when children share hats, combs, or brushes. Ringworm of the body can be spread on towels, clothing, or sports equipment. Personal hygiene is important in preventing the spread of ringworm. Dogs and cats can be infected with ringworm, too, and they can pass it to people through direct contact.
U.S. National Library of Medicine:
Ringworm can spread easily from one person to another. You can catch ringworm if you touch someone who has the infection, or if you come into contact with items contaminated by the fungus, such as combs, unwashed clothing, and shower or pool surfaces. You can also catch ringworm from pets that carry the fungus. Cats are common carriers.
The fungus that causes ringworm thrive in warm, moist areas. Ringworm is more likely when you are often wet (such as from sweating) and from minor injuries to your skin, scalp, or nails
Why am I on this? Because it was obvious from the Budget & Finance meeting much earlier in the month that this was a high profile/ huge PR for the City. So for sure no problems. It is sad that this very intelligent, fine looking and trusting young fella got fed a bunch of B.S. He stated very emphatically the above were caused by the bad air in the current and very inadequate building the kids used. It is by and large as noted above due to poor hygiene in that building and prior contamination probably in the homes of some of these kids. I will admit, I caught ringworm as a kid from a kitten. Yep, a kitten; it was suspected it caught it from its mother. So it does not take much to contact it and can be tough to get rid of once on site. Comments on "chores/ responsibilities" should include the purchasing of some very, very good cleaning materials to use on the mats/ weights/ all surfaces and towels if these kids are showering at the School? This should be a responsibility of the School, most especially its maintenance staff; but suspect the City will kick in instead. These kids are getting figuratively screwed by this School and School District IF and I repeat IF these problems are as bad as alleged?.
