Actually she had a small catering concern going up North in the day. Did that with her Adult Day Care and working in the local Catholic Hospital. Made pretty good money at it, but I always suspected she sold her wares far too cheap. Was and still is excellent Filipina cook. I really liked the Shanghai Lumpia but not so much the Fresh Lumpia. Crunchy versus soft.
In any case, moving on, I am pretty sure by Wednesday to have a good question on how politicized our Library has become? More on that of course come Wednesday.
Was looking at the filing days allowed and it is the 11th - 30th of January. Only 14 business days business days to file as the 18th of January is Martin Luther King day- Federal Holiday. Can't really speak on other places, but it seems the filing period is set up to aid the incumbents who have had the experience of filing for several Elections and against the newbie who is a first timer?
Now Mr. Azinger will have his folks to help him prepare the paperwork again and Mr. Conley being the fair haired boy of Mr. Rapp will for sure have all the help he will need too.
I am going to be candid here; I of course call this "Truth in Advertising". I do NOT see Mr. Azinger being able to complete a full term should he win the Election? I am not talking about the leg surgery he underwent in Pittsburg some months back but other issues I do not think he is willingly going to tell the Community about? Electing him, would be a short term incumbency. That would make him nothing more than a potential "spoiler" because of his name recognition. And as I have already noted, I believe him to be a stalking horse for Mr. Rapp if he runs again?
When he first won the seat that Mr. Thornton held in 2014 (remember this year, it will show up again very soon) and before he was sworn in, he would speak to me sometimes. I eventually told him that he should not do that as he would end up in the "wood shed". He now does not as is the case with most of the Council/ and all but a couple of the Department Heads. They can all be trained quickly it seems?
And in all fairness, I am pretty hard on the Council and most of the Department Heads. But if one will or can not do what they have been Elected or hired to do, than they are negligent as I have pointed out time after time. As long as I live in Vienna, I am going to say that all 10K plus residents deserve equal treatment from their City Administration.
Was reading an article on how Hawaii cannot seem to find a way to get anything named for Mr. Obama. I was going to make a sarcastic comment here, but decided that as Mr. Obama is becoming such a public joke through out the civilized world that it was not worth it now. Maybe we should all kick in a dollar a piece and buy him a Tombstone Company? He would have business backed up for years to come.
Churches Offer Sanctuary To Immigrants Facing Deportation"
As pastors we know that each and every family is a holy family."
REUTERS 12/26/2015 12:50 pm ET By Steve Gorman
LOS ANGELES, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Leaders of the church-based Sanctuary Movement vowed on Friday to offer their places of worship as refuge for immigrants facing deportation under an Obama administration crackdown on Central American families who entered the United States illegally.
The statement came two days after The Washington Post first reported the U.S. government was planning a series of raids to remove hundreds of undocumented families as early as January in the first such large-scale effort targeting the recent flood of border crossers.
The Department of Homeland Security preparations to intensify deportations of Central American migrants, confirmed by U.S. government sources, drew immediate fire from Democratic presidential candidates and human rights groups.
Leaders of the multi-denominational Sanctuary Movement, which has sheltered at least 10 immigrants from deportation over the past 18 months, joined in the criticism on Friday, alluding to the biblical Nativity story of Mary and Joseph seeking refuge before the birth of Jesus.
"As pastors we know that each and every family is a holy family," said the Rev. Alison Harrington, pastor of Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona. "We open our doors to today's Josephs and Marys. ... The gift we have to offer on Christmas Day is the gift of sanctuary."
The Sanctuary Movement, which Harrington said encompasses about 50 congregations in a dozen U.S. cities, made headlines in January by providing refuge in Philadelphia to a Honduran woman whose two children were born in the United States. She ultimately won a two-year reprieve from deportation.
The Rev. Noel Anderson, a coordinator for the affiliated Church World Service, put the overall number of congregations supporting the sanctuary network at about 300 in more than 20 states nationwide.
Immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua have been streaming into the United States from Mexico by the thousands since early 2014 - many of them unaccompanied minors and families - fleeing extreme poverty, gangs and drug violence in their home countries.
Most were detained after turning themselves in at the border seeking asylum, but were released to surrounding communities after initial screening to await further proceedings
.
A 2008 U.S. anti-human tracking law bars undocumented Central American children from being summarily sent back, as they could be if they were from Mexico or Canada.
Government sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, have said the new campaign by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency marks an expansion from mostly targeting individuals to pursuing families with undocumented members who have already been ordered to leave.
Asked why the agency was singling out families, a spokesperson said the crackdown focused on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security, "whether alone or with family members."
Support for the move came from U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, who said it would help "eliminate the incentive that results from allowing 95.6 percent of these illegal immigrants to stay."
Harrington said she feared the crackdown will ensnare many who lacked sufficient time or legal representation to prepare asylum claims and "were too quickly put through the system."
As the word is and has gotten out on the probable deportations, the various groups have begun to circle the wagons to protect those who came here Illegally. Would be most fitting if ICE arrested a few dozen of those providing this "sanctuary" on behalf of the Illegals. Give them a few days in the local hoosegow and some may find their tendencies to break the law to become a bit less.
See where the Pew Foundation did a survey and found that Tax Revenue was only up 1.1% in adjusted dollars between 2007 and 2015. The National average was 5.6%. Problem was tax cuts (WHERE ?, the sales tax on food which NEVER should have been put in to begin with), reductions in Severance Taxes due to issues with Gas/ Oil/ Coal. This survey ended in mid 2015 BEFORE the State took a major downturn in the economy.
Now the State and County are crying poor mouth almost every day but some how seem to keep giving raises at the Circuit Clerk's Office and the Tax Assessor's Office in Wood County. Than the next thing one hears is no staff to do the work. Maybe it they had hired a replacement for the departing employee, work could have been done.
State level, we ain't seen nothing yet. Wait till next year and the Legislature go into session and more taxes to try and head off shortages in upcoming budget. But still enough money for raises/ benefit increases if only paying the higher premiums for the employees.
And of course my favorite: Vienna, nineteen (19 years of maxing out every tax the City could with NOTHING back to the Tax Payers. Finally, a few pennies to the City Businesses and a pittance for the removal of the CAS/ SuddenLink Franchise fee. As I have said since 2011, the City is overtaxed. The response from the City Council from than to now? The infamous double digit middle fingers to the City Residents/ Tax Payers. Now remember this includes your wannbee new Mayor, Mr. Azinger. His right hand was up in the air along with the rest of them EXCEPT for one NO vote by Mr. Stephens. And they will be coming next month for Re-election. (correction: Meant for filing Would be nice if the Election would be over next month). If you want to continue getting stuffed just go ahead and re-elect them. If not- think twice- vote once. 'nuff said.
